In the context of the exhibition We Cannot Be Say

As part of the exhibition We Cannot Be Say, bringing together Japanese artists Yoichiro Otani and Yasui Chisato, Galerie AIFA in Verbier will host a Japanese whisky tasting on Saturday, March 28.

Conceived as an extension of the exhibition, this event creates a meeting point between different expressions of Japanese culture. Within the gallery space, visitors will be invited to discover a selection of Japanese whiskies in a subtle dialogue with the artworks on view.

For this occasion, Figee , a Zurich-based company, will guide the tasting and share its expertise, offering insight into the history and craftsmanship behind this tradition.

Echoing the spirit of We Cannot Be Say, the event proposes a moment that is both aesthetic and sensory, where contemporary art meets the culture of taste.

AIFA Gallery, in collaboration with Ms Mooser, a specialist in traditional Kintsugi, invites you

to explore one of the fascinating aspects of Japanese culture.

More than just a technique for repairing ceramics, Kintsugi embodies a philosophy: Wabi-Sabi,

a celebration of imperfection, transience and the beauty of the traces of time.

A true immersion in contemporary Japanese culture.

Guided by Ms Mooser's expertise, each participant will have the opportunity to enhance a piece

of ceramics, transforming fragility into brilliance.

It is also an opportunity to experience a moment of slowness and contemplation while discovering

the depth of Japanese art through the various works on display in the gallery.

Since 2018, AIFA's mission has been to promote Japanese art beyond its borders,

particularly in Switzerland.

The art of Kintsugi is a unique example of this: it is not just a technique, but a philosophical approach that invites serenity and reflection.

Surrounded by contemporary creations, you will be at the heart of a dialogue between tradition and modernity, where each piece reflects today's Japanese sensibility and aesthetics.

Kineta Kunimatsu Joins AIFA

AIFA is thrilled to start exhibiting the great artist Kineta Kunimatsu .

Kineta Kunimatsu, was born in Hokkaido, in 1977. He graduated from Tama Art University's Department of Sculpture in 2001 and has been an active member of the Tobiu Art Community in Shiraoi, Hokkaido since 2002.

He creates wood sculptures and paintings inspired by the surrounding landscape, particularly the meeting lines where sea, land, and sky converge. Since 2009, Kineta has been developing a painting series called Horizon, inspired by photographs taken along the Shiraoi coastline near his studio in Hokkaido.

Kineta Kunimatsu’s works have gained attention at exhibitions both in Japan and abroad. He has exhibited in renowned institutions abroad such as Villa Savoye, Poissy, France, and The Noguchi Museum in New York. Today, his works are part of renowned collections, including the Takahashi Ryutaro Collection and the Obayashi Collection in Tokyo, Japan and the Maison Louis Carré in France.

Kouzo Takeuchi Joins AIFA

AIFA is thrilled to start exhibiting the great ceramic artist Kouzo Takeuchi .

Kouzo Takeuchi was born in Hyogo Prefecture in 1977. In 2001, he graduated from the Osaka University of Arts, majoring in ceramics and then studied at the Tajimi City Pottery Design and Technical Center in Gifu.

Kouzo’s fascination with geometric forms, especially aggregate ones, began in childhood and developed into artistic expression during his formal education. Images of ancient ruins in South America inspired him to the extent that he wanted to express the distinctive atmosphere of decaying buildings in his work.

Due to their innovative nature, Kouzo’s ceramic works have gained attention at exhibitions both in Japan and abroad. Today, his works are part of renowned collections, including the Museum of Fine Art in Boston, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Cernuschi museum in Paris and the Ibaraki Ceramic Art Museum in Japan.

AIFA is thrilled to start exhibiting the great ceramicist and architect Yuki Nara .

Yuki Nara was born in 1989 in Kanazawa, Ishikawa prefecture, into the Ohi family, a long line of renowned ceramists whose history dates back to the Edo period (1603–1868). Nara's grandfather, Ohi Chozaemon X, was named a 'living national treasure of Japan,' the highest honour. Through 11 generations, the Ohi family has preserved this heritage, which is celebrated for its rugged beauty and 350-year legacy.

Nara first received a degree in architecture from Tokyo University of the Arts in 2013. In 2016, he graduated with high distinction from the Tajimi City Institute of Ceramic Design and in 2017, he graduated with top honours from the Graduate School of Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts.

Due to their innovative nature, Yuki Nara's ceramic works quickly gained attention at exhibitions both in Japan and abroad. Today, his works are part of renowned collections, including the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art in Kanazawa and the Ueshima Museum Collection.

AIFA is thrilled to start exhibiting the great painter Nanami Azuma .

Born in 1997 in Chiba, Japan, Nanami Azuma grew up surrounded by creativity with her mother being active in the fashion world and her brother a web designer. Initially, Nanami got attracted by design studies, but her passion for drawing led her to study art. She graduated from Tama Art University in Tokyo in 2022 followed by a master’s degree in Oil Painting in 2024.

Creating her paintings is a meticulous process that begins with drawing individual lines using a paintbrush. From these simple structures, she constructs intricate compositions where lines join to form shapes, and shapes interact to create space. Each line is carefully considered, and colours are selected in response to each other, layered to create depth and vibrancy. Repetition is central to her work, yet it is far from mechanical processing.

Marie Higashi was born in Sasebo, Nagasaki Prefecture. She began her professional life as a nurse before turning to painting during a period of personal distress and crisis. To turn things around, Marie instinctively started to paint, marking the beginning of her artistic journey. She discovered in painting a powerful medium to express the fine line between life and death she used to witness in surgery rooms.

Chisato’s work explores the complexity of the world we live in and the limitations of existing constructs, cultures, societies, and respective histories. The artist believes that there are some fluid situations that can’t be easily categorized or expressed in a language, and that the human experience and identity often transcends rigid boundaries. Her ceramic creations challenge established assumptions, offering alternative perspectives, and inviting viewers to consider the complexity of our existence.

Chisato Yasui has gained recognition amongst the Japanese art community over the past years and she has exhibited her outstanding ceramic sculptures in numerous exhibitions in Japan and in Europe. In 2021, she was invited to participate in the Women's Association of Ceramic Art exhibition.

Takeshi Igawa is an esteemed successor of ancient Japanese Urushi pioneers and is regarded as one of the leading exponents of the new wave of Japanese lacquer artists.

Takeshi Igawa’s sculptures carry elegance and simplicity to immerse the viewer into the Japanese aesthetic. His artworks found their way into the most highly regarded collections in Japan and abroad such as the collection of the Minneapolis Institute of Art (MIA). He is currently an associate professor at the prestigious Saga University in Kyushu.

AIFA will exhibit artworks by two artists representing distinctive approaches to Japanese contemporary art.
Kenji Gomi uses clay in his perpetual quest to form the perfect shape; a technique that has its roots in more than fifteen thousand years of Japanese pottery history. Driven by the completing of a shape where universality and uniqueness coexist, Kenji’s art making process places firing at the core of his creation and does not leave space to the unpredictable.
Aya Kawato paints canvas expressing both control and imperfection, as an inevitable pattern of manual work, plunging viewers' minds into perceptive spheres beyond common reach. A search for a beauty precisely engendered by the misalignment between what is seen and what is perceived. Randomness then becomes the quintessence of Aya’s work and procures her works with fascinating unique patterns.

Sayuri Ikake, New Inspiration

Solo Exhibition

Expected in Summer 2021, Gallery Meguro , based in Mie prefecture will showcase Sayuri Ikake new inspiration works.

Since her last show in Geneva Switzerland, Sayuri has been working in developing her next project in Japan. Based in the city of Shigaraki, a niche of creative contemporary ceramists, she has worked on very interesting new forms of expression. Dates of the show will be shared at a later date.

Kohei Ukai joins AIFA

AIFA is proud to announce a new collaboration with Kohei Ukai . A young lacquer artist based in Kanazawa, Japan.

Attracted by the symbiotic relationship between Urushi and wood, he creates sculptures using mostly camphor, Katsura and Keyaki trees. Urushi itself evokes the natural world, and its use in Ukai’s sculptures should not be seen as a decorating material.

AIFA is delighted to be working on its new gallery space opening in December 2021, in Verbier, Switzerland. AIFA's centrally located gallery will showcase both Fine Art and Fine Craft programs, representing emerging contemporary Japanese Artists.

For the opening season, AIFA will present various expressions of Japanese contemporary Art. Beautiful ceramics from Shinya Tanoue and Namika Nakai will be exhibited next to g lass works by the talented artist from Kanazawa Shizue Sato and by Kohei Ukai, also from Kanazawa, finalist of 2020 LOEWE Craft Foundation prize.

Besides, full of talent artist, Kogei Miura, freshly graduating from Kyoto Saga University of art, is currently working on new painting works AIFA is excited to be soon sharing with our visitors. From the permanent collection, Sayuri Ikake and Aya Kawato great artworks will be shown.
