Do you see it? | Duo Show
Chisato Yasui | Reiko Kinoshita
8th of July 2023 – 19th of August 2023
AIFA Verbier, Switzerland
How can artists express the passing of time, record feelings, or contextualize the enigmatic of their artwork? How can they transcend mere representation and manifest the invisible? These profound inquiries lie at the very core of the artistic process embraced by the two Japanese artists featuring this ground-breaking exhibition.
Reiko's paintings and
Chisato's ceramic sculptures assume the role of storytellers, evoking emotions and unravelling the tapestry of past and present.
Reiko's brushstrokes seize the essence of time's passage within her paintings. When looking at her works, one becomes aware that something once occupied the canvas, yet now, it has vanished. Only the silhouette, the memory of the shape, remains after time has passed.
Reiko
is fascinated by the idea of time and how it affects us in our lives. She firmly believes that the timing of events and our human destiny are inextricably intertwined.
Their pieces explore liminal spaces, a threshold between the known and the unknown, consciousness and the unconscious. Both artists challenge established assumptions, offer alternative perspectives, and invite viewers to consider the complexity of our existence.
In her sculptures, Chisato ventures into the labyrinthine complexities of our world, transcending the limitations of established constructs, cultures, societies, and their respective histories. She suggests that certain aspects of our existence cannot be adequately encapsulated or characterized by existing frameworks, and that the human experience and identity frequently transcend rigid boundaries.
This exhibition is an invitation to contemplate the concealed dimensions of our world and their resonance with our own subjective experiences. "Do you see it?" aims to ask viewers to delve into their perception, to unearth what they truly sense when encountering a work of art.
Artists Profiles
Chisato Yasui, ceramic and mixed media artist, was born in 1984 in Aichi Prefecture. She obtained her master’s degree in Art and Design from the University of Tsukuba in 2010 and currently resides in Tsukuba-city, Ibaraki.
Chisato’s art pieces explore these liminal spaces, offering viewers an opportunity to contemplate hidden dimensions of our world and their connection to our own subjective experiences. Her works' interaction with existing constructs is intended to stimulate viewers' exploration of their own new contexts.
Chisato Yasui has gained recognition amongst the Japanese art community over the past years and she has exhibited her outstanding ceramic sculptures in numerous exhibitions in Japan and in Europe. In 2021, she was invited to participate in the Women's Association of Ceramic Art exhibition.
Reiko graduated from the Musashino Art University in 2009, with specialization in oil painting. Fascinated by the frontier between intention and unconsciousness in art creation, she has developed a specific technique that combines photographic paper exposed to sunlight with paint spraying, creating wrinkles and folds to form shapes on canvas.
Reiko has exhibited her works at numerous solo and group shows over the years, such as a recent display at Nakata Art Museum, Onomichi and a solo show at Gallery Crossing, Gifu. A great attention is paid to her artistic approach that pushes boundaries further away from conventionalities.
asanori Maeda's paintings are structured around horizontal or vertical layered blocks of alternating colours. Involving constant negotiation between calm and vitality and a balance between light and shadows; plunging the viewer into an almost meditative state.
